Misrepresentation Suspension

Google cannot confidently verify that your business is who it claims to be, or that your product information accurately represents what you're selling. Misrepresentation is an umbrella term covering 7 distinct sub-categories — your suspension email won't tell you which one triggered it.

Account SuspensionAccount - SuspensionReviewed April 10, 2026
Exact text Google shows
Account suspended due to policy violation: Misrepresentation of self or product

Impact: Account-level enforcement. All products disapproved immediately. No warning period in most cases.

Root Causes

  • 1Misrepresentation of self: incomplete business information (no address, no phone, mismatched Business Profile)
  • 2Misrepresentation of product: product data doesn't match landing page (titles, images, prices, availability)
  • 3Untrustworthy promotions: promises that cannot be verified (free shipping without policy, money-back without terms)
  • 4Unavailable promotions: promotions advertised but not actually honored on the site
  • 5Omission of relevant information: missing policy pages (shipping, returns, contact, privacy)
  • 6Misleading/unrealistic promotions: 'Lose 20 lbs in a week', '80% off retail' without substantiation
  • 7Dishonest pricing: inflated compare-at prices, hidden fees at checkout, auto-added upsells

Fix by Platform

  1. 1Run the 7-type diagnostic (see /google-merchant-center/misrepresentation-types page).
  2. 2Verify business info: Settings → General → Business Profile. Name, address, phone must match exactly across Shopify, GMC, Google Business Profile, and your domain WHOIS.
  3. 3Add missing policy pages: Settings → Policies. All 4 required: Shipping, Returns, Privacy, Contact. Google checks each is reachable via your footer.
  4. 4Remove inflated 'Compare at' prices if they don't reflect a genuine prior price.
  5. 5Audit product pages for any 'guaranteed', 'best in class', 'lowest price' claims — remove unless you can substantiate.
  6. 6Once fixed, submit ONE review request with a detailed change log. Do not re-submit if rejected without further changes (cooldown applies).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does misrepresentation suspension reinstatement take?+

First appeal: 3-7 business days. Second+ appeals: progressively longer cooldowns (up to 30 days). Make your first appeal count by fixing all 7 sub-types before submitting.

Can I open a new Merchant Center account instead of appealing?+

No. Google detects circumvention via domain, business info, and payment details. Opening a new account will trigger Circumventing Systems — a much harder suspension to recover from.

Does Google tell me which of the 7 sub-types caused my suspension?+

Rarely. The suspension email typically says 'Misrepresentation of self or product'. You need to audit all 7 to guarantee your appeal covers the trigger.

Is appealing worth it if I have a dropshipping store?+

Yes, but dropshipping stores face higher scrutiny. Compliance requirements are the same, but Google's reviewers apply them more strictly. Expect to need more trust signals (original product descriptions, unique images, about-page story, verified business identity).
